Pain Relief

This is a primary reason for people to seek dental treatment. Toothache, gum infection, muscle spasms, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction can cause spontaneous pain. Some pain occurs only upon stimulation of hot or cold substances, applied pressure, sugary foods, and air. Dr. Perlmutter diagnoses the cause of the pain and recommends the proper treatment(s) for short and long-term success. Sometimes the pain will disappear with no treatment as the body heals itself, or a nerve dies and can no longer produce pain (although this may result in future problems). Local anesthetic is the most common and most effective method for immediate relief of spontaneous pain. For long-term relief of pain, specific treatment of the diseased site is required. Sometimes ozone can be applied to a tender gum lesion without local anesthetic to produce immediate reduction in pain. The DioBeam 830, which delivers measured amounts of low-level laser light, is the newest technology available to reduce or eliminate pain. See low level laser light therapy for more information.
