Periodontal Treatment
The gums and bone surrounding the teeth can be made healthy by thorough cleaning in the dental office and at home. Where the infection has gone deeper than 4 mm, however, a thorough cleaning is not always possible unless surgery is performed to make the roots of the teeth visible. After surgery, the gums will heal closer to the bone, making subsequent cleaning in the dental office and at home easier and more effective. Dr. Perlmutter may do the gum surgery or refer the patient to a periodontist. Good nutrition, sometimes enhanced by high quality nutritional supplements, can be an important factor for periodontal healing. Ozone therapy may be used to kill bacteria and/or to enhance healing.
